Every time you support Bloodworks Northwest and Vitalant, your chapter could accumulate points! Be the chapter within Washington that earns the most and you could win these prizes.

The Race to Save Lives Leaderboard will be available this December and updated throughout the month.

ACTIVITIES to complete FOR YOUR BLOOD DRIVE OR CASH FUNDRAISER

1. Hosting a blood or cash drive (required to compete in the challenge). 100 points awarded
2. Collect $100 during your cash drive and donate it here. There is no submission on this form necessary. Washington DECA will automatically monitor your financial donations! 10 points will be awarded per $100 raised. There is no limit to the amount of points you can collect through money raised.
3. Make an Instagram Reel or video and post on your chapter’s Instagram or Facebook account promoting your blood drive or cash drive event. Send us a link to your social post through the Google Form! 15 points awarded per Reel/video. You can submit for this activity up to three different times for three different videos. Each different submission should be submitted individually through the Google Form.
4. Take a photo of your chapter president(s) with a Bloodworks Northwest/Vitalant volunteer at your blood drive! Submit the photo at the Google Form. 5 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity one time.
5. Post a photo of your blood/cash drive on your chapter’s Instagram or Facebook account. Submit a URL of your post to us through the Google Form! 15 points per submission. You can submit for this activity up to three different times for different social media posts. Each different submission should be submitted individually through the Google Form above.

6. Collect a virtual blood drive donor. The donor will donate blood at a verified location.

Each chapter will need to reach out to their assigned organization (Bloodworks or Vitalant) to set up their virtual blood drive. Bloodworks Northwest and Vitalant will issue these codes during their appointment.

There is no submission necessary on any form. Washington DECA will automatically monitor the number of donors who successfully donate blood and provide your chapter code. Number of points awarded >>>

If your school has 10-1,000 students, you will be awarded 2 points per in-person or virtual blood donor. An unlimited number of donors accepted.

If your school has 1,001+ students, you will be awarded 1 point per in-person or virtual blood donor. An unlimited number of donors accepted.

7. Collect an in-person blood drive donor. The donor will donate blood during your scheduled blood drive event. There is no submission necessary on this form. Washington DECA will communicate with the blood drive hosts to determine the number of donors who successfully donate blood during your blood drive. If your school has 10-1,000 students, you will be awarded 2 points per in-person or virtual blood donor. An unlimited number of donors accepted.

8. We want to hear from you! Get testimonials from DECA members in your chapter who participated in the blood drive and have them answer: “What have I learned from donating blood?” This can be a personal story, facts about blood donation, etc.

Create a social media post of their testimonials (appropriate and impactful) and tag @bloodworksnw, @vitalantnw, and @washingtondeca. Send a URL of your post in the Google Form.

10 points will be awarded per testimonial. You can submit for this activity up to ten times.

9. Make a social media post on your chapter’s Instagram or Facebook account in January spreading awareness of National Blood Donor Month. Submit a URL of your post to us through this Google Form! 10 points per submission. You can submit for this activity up to one time.
10. Hang posters in your school advertising blood donor awareness. Include the Bloodworks Northwest, Vitalant and Washington DECA logos on your posters. Send us a photo of your posters through the Google Form. 5 points awarded per poster. You can submit for this activity up to three different times for three different posters. Each different submission should be submitted individually through the Google Form.
11. Make a social media post with statistics about the importance of blood donating and post it on your chapter’s Instagram or Facebook account. Send us a link to the social post through the Google Form. 10 points per post. You can submit for this activity up to three different times for three different social media posts. Each submission should be submitted individually through the Google Form above.
12. Make a social media post on your chapter’s Instagram or Facebook account thanking Bloodworks Northwest and Vitalant for their amazing work. Tag @bloodworksnw, @vitalantnw and @washingtondeca. Send us a URL of your post through the Google Form! 15 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity one time.
13. Come up with a catchy slogan about a blood drive and how Washington DECA is racing to save lives through our community service partnership. Post it on your chapter through an Instagram reel. Tag @bloodworksnw and @vitalantnw and @washingtondeca. Submit a URL of your Instagram reel and submit it to the Google Form. 15 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only one time. (Bonus points if it’s a creative and well executed/filmed reel!)

14. Make a themed photo booth at your school that promotes awareness about donating blood. Capture people using your photobooth and post on your chapter’s Instagram or Facebook account. Tag @bloodworksnw, @vitalantnw and @washingtondeca. Submit a URL of your post to the Google Form. 20 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only one time.
15. Host a table promoting donor sign-ups at your school, hand out flyers about Bloodworks Northwest/Vitalant, and provide interactive activities around your table that helps students and teachers understand how they can donate blood and save lives! Send us a photo of your table and its activities through the Google Form. 20 points per table. You can submit for this activity up to two different times for DIFFERENT tables. Each different submission should be submitted individually through the Google Form above. Must document each time. Extra points for creativity in your activities!
16. At ANY school sporting game, host a Bloodworks Northwest, Vitalant and DECA table AND coordinate DECA members to wear red to a game. 20 bonus points if your chapter makes their own red shirts! 50 bonus points if you can seek approval from your school administration or ASB to establish the specific sporting game as a school-wide red out! Make an Instagram reel or video of the game, post to your chapter account, and tag @bloodworksnw, @vitalantnw, and @washingtondeca. Submit a URL of your post to the Google Form! 30 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity up to three different times for DIFFERENT sporting events. Each different submission should be submitted individually through the Google Form above.

17. During a chapter meeting, have all members draw the Bloodworks Northwest or Vitalant logo with their eyes shut. Send us a photo of your chapter members’ submissions through the Google Form!  10 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only one time.
18. During a chapter meeting, have all chapter members fold an origami drop of blood (we recommend searching up “origami teardrop” and using red paper). Send us a photo of your chapter doing this activity through the Google Form! 15 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only one time.
19. During a chapter meeting, come up with your own activity that promotes Bloodworks Northwest or Vitalant. The activity cannot be one listed already. Bonus points for creativity! Send us several photos through the Google Form of your chapter completing this activity along with a short caption explaining their actions. 20 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity up to three different times for DIFFERENT activities. Each different submission should be submitted individually through the Google Form above.
20. Pick a song with “blood” in the lyrics. The song must be appropriate for school! Create a lip dub video with your chapter.

You have two methods of submission:

  1. Upload this video to YouTube and send a link to the video through the Google Form
  2. Post the video to your chapter’s Facebook or Instagram account (tagging @bloodworksnw, @vitalantnw, and @washingtondeca) and send a URL of your video in the Google Form.
10-20 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity up to two different times for different social media posts. Each different submission should be submitted individually through the Google Form above.
21. Decorate your SBE (student store) with Bloodworks Northwest and Vitalant-themed decor. Post photos or a video to your chapter’s Instagram account (tagging @bloodworksnw, @vitalantnw, and @washingtondeca) and send a URL of the posting in the Google Form. Please be respectful in your decorations. 10-30 points will be awarded based on creativity! Bonus points if you have some of your chapter members in the photo. You can submit for this activity only one time.
22. Create and hang 10 large, blood-drive-inspired, handmade DECA diamonds in your DECA classroom and submit a photo to the Google Form. Diamonds should be appropriate and respectful! 10-30 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only one time.
23. Do you think our partnership with Bloodworks Northwest and Vitalant rocks? Show us! Decorate at least three rocks DECA/Bloodworks/Vitalant style and place them around your school. This can be done as a fun chapter activity as well! Submit a photo of your chapter’s rocks through the Google Form. Up to 10 points will be awarded per rock. Submit the photos of up to three rocks at one time. You can submit for this activity only one time.
24. Want to spice up your life? Host a blood drive cookie decorating contest! Decoration examples include writing AB+ and O- in frosting, heart-shaped cookies, etc! Submit photos of the cookies to the Google Form. Please be respectful in your actions and designs. 20 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only one time. Bonus points for super creative decorating!
25. Have your chapter decorate a hat in blood drive style (with the Washington DECA, Bloodworks Northwest, and Vitalant logos) and get your principal or another administrator to wear it for a day! Submit a photo of them through the Google Form. 20 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only once. Bonus points for creativity and eye-catchingness when decorating your hat!
26. In January, decorate the outside of your DECA classroom door to bring awareness to these topics/organizations. Please incorporate the following into your door decor:

  • January is National Blood Donor Month
  • DECA logo
  • Vitalant logo
  • Bloodworks Northwest logo
  • Community Service is in our Blood and/or Racing to Save Lives
25 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only once. Bonus points for creativity and eye-catchingness!

27. Bad hair day? Make it better with some blood drive pizzazz! Have chapter members cover their hair with red accessories (red clips, pins, hairbands, bows, etc.)  and wear it around school all day (honor system!). If anyone asks, they must tell them about the importance of blood donation! Submit a photo of the individuals  through the Google Form. 15 points will be awarded per DECA member who participates, limited to 10 members per submission. You can submit for this activity up to 4 times throughout the year.
28. Does your school have a mascot? Get permission from your administration to attach a big “I donated blood” button or sticker to your mascot at a sporting event or an assembly. Take a photo with chapter members and submit through the Google Form.  5 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only once.
29. Nothing’s cuter than your pet… so make an Instagram or Facebook post on your chapter’s account of five chapter members and their pets dressed in all red! Add a caption about how important blood drives are and tag @washingtondeca, @bloodworksnw, and @vitalantnw. Submit a URL to your post through the Google Form! 5 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only once. Bonus points for creativity!
30. As DECA members, we’re thinking about DECA at all hours of the day… but also at night! With at least fifteen chapter members, take a photo after dark (or with all the lights turned off) of members holding their phone flashlights in the shape of a heart. Post the photo to your chapter’s Instagram or Facebook account with a caption about your chapter’s blood/cash drive and tag @washingtondeca, @bloodworksnw, and @vitalantnw. Submit a URL to your post through the Google Form. 5 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only once. Bonus points for a very crisp heart!
31. Contact another Career and Technical Skills Organization at your school (TSA, FBLA, BPA, FFA, SkillsUSA, WCTSMA, HOSA) and ask them to pass out flyers about your blood/cash drive at their next meeting! Take a photo of both CTSO’s presidents standing together at the meeting holding up the flyers. Post to your chapter’s Instagram or Facebook account and tag @washingtondeca, @bloodworksnw, and @vitalantnw! Submit a URL to your post through the Google Form. 20 points will be awarded. You can submit for this activity only once.

32. Hype Your Donors! 

  1. If you live in Areas 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, or 9… Hype up your donors:  Host a live Where the Heart Lives concert a week or so before your blood drive to engage, educate, and encourage blood donors.  It’s an exciting way to promote your drive and provide some fun!  Contact Giselle Lehmann to secure your concert date:  glehmann@bloodworksnw.org 
  2. If you live in Areas 6, 10, or 11… Engage your donors:  Host a game of Kahoots based on blood facts! Donors can play either at or before drives. Contact Erin Baker from Vitalant at EBaker@vitalant.org!

33. Send us 10 different videos AND 10 different photos of your chapter executing your blood drive or cash fundraiser! (Group shots, action shots, etc. Just make sure to feature lots of members!) Photos can be horizontal or vertical. Videos should be filmed horizontal. 300 points to be awarded for completing this activity.
